Q. Why am I getting a Server 500 error?
A. Internal Server Error 500 is a generic error that covers a multitude of issues. To see the real error message, you need to disable friendly errors in your browser options.

To disable friendly error messages, in your browser (assumes IE), select Tools > Internet Options and click Advanced.

Then UNtick "Show friendly HTTP error messages" and click Apply > OK

Finally, re-load the page showing the error to see the real issue.

Q. Help, why am I getting a runtime error '800a0046' error
A. This error means 'Permission Denied' and is typically caused by incorrect permissions being given on your server. To prevent this occuring, you MUST ensure your server account (e.g. in Internet Information Services this would be IUSR_) has read AND write access to the guestbook.txt file.

If you are using a third party host for your website, you will need to get in touch with them.

Alternatively, modifying the guestbook files, so guestbook.txt is in the Private instead of htdocs folder, should resolve this for you.

To modify the files, change the following lines to the path of your Private folder, in the files specified below.

File: viewguestbook.asp

Line: GuestBookFile = Server.MapPath("guestbook.txt")
Change to: GuestBookFile = Server.MapPath("..\private\guestbook.txt")

File: addtogb.asp

Line: GuestBookFile = Server.MapPath("guestbook.txt")
Change to: GuestBookFile = Server.MapPath("..\private\guestbook.txt")

Your hosts permissions will dictate whether or not the private folder is writable by the required account, so this is not a definitive solution.

Q. Why am I getting the error "Error: One or more required fields were of an invalid length"?
A. This is not actually an error as such, it is a bit of code within the addtogb.asp file that tells the script to check the length of each field when the form is submitted.

To remove these checks, open addtogb.asp in Notepad and locate the lines containing;

If len(strFld1) < 3 Then Response.Redirect "default.asp?err=1"

If you would like the script to keep checking but would like a higher limit, change the 3 to the number you would prefer.

Q. I have created a guestbook with Guestbook Generator, but my host does not support ASP, will you host it for me?
A. Yes. In cases such as this, you should send us an e-mail with your guestbook attatched, and your website address.

Guestbooks will be hosted completely free of charge, no popups, adverts or other commercial/non-commercial additions will be placed on your guestbook unless YOU ask us to do so.

When sending your request, please place "Guestbook Hosting" in the subject line.

Q. Are there any plans to add multi-language support?
A. Unfortunately, the only language I actually know is English. However, if you would like to volunteer to help translate it, or know anyone that might wish to, please feel free to contact us.

Q. My server doesn't support ASP, can I still use the guestbook I've created?
A. No. Your web server MUST support ASP before you can use guestbooks that have been created with Guestbook Generator.

Q. How do I change the Comments text box to a text area?
A. This applies to v1.1 and is a bug in the program. You can change it to a textarea by modifying the line below.

<tr><td>Comments:</td><td><input name=FIELD4 rows=20 cols=50></td></tr>

Should be changed to:

<tr><td colspan="100%"><textarea name="FIELD4" cols="22" rows="5"><%=request.querystring("FIELD4")%> </textarea></td></tr>

Q. How do I change the Submit button caption?
A. The Submit button caption can be changed by modifying the following line;

From

<input type=submit>

To

<input type=submit value=Submit>

Where value=Submit is the caption you would like. For example;

value="Click Here"

Q. The files are on my server but &lt;%=request.querystring("FIELD4")%&gt; is still visible?
A. In this case, it is likely that your server does not support ASP. You should contact your server's administrator to verify they have ASP support.

Q. Why is &lt;%=request.querystring("FIELD4")%&gt; visible when I am viewing the guestbook?
A. This is visible when you are viewing your guestbook on your computer. It will not be visible when the file is placed on the webserver.

Q. Can I preview a guestbook created with this program?
A. You certainly can. A preview copy has been uploaded and can be viewed at:

http://support.it-mate.co.uk/temp/gbg_ex/

Q. I'm getting Microsoft VBScript Runtime Error 800a0035, whats wrong?
A. This error typically occurs when the file that is required, does not exist (namely guestbook.txt), or the script is looking in the wrong folder for it. To check this, first verify guestbook.txt actually exists, if so, check the .asp file's, to make sure they are looking in the correct folder.

By default, the connection path for the file tells it to look in the same folder as your .asp file's.
